The Unique Beauty of Tahitian Pearls

Produced in the black-lipped oyster ‘Pinctada margaritifera’ and predominantly found in and around Tahiti, these stunning pearls are most noticeable for their rich, dark colours. They are often referred to as ‘black pearls’ but this doesn’t do justice to the huge range of colours normally discernable, ranging from charcoal to a glossy, greenish rainbow effect. Pure black pearls are very rare.

Tahitian pearls tend to be larger than your average pearl, as the black-lipped oyster can grow to over a foot in size. These have been hunted almost to extinction because, not only do they produce these stunning pearls, they also boast a particularly lovely mother-of-pearl inner shell.

The black-lipped oyster is very sensitive to the pearl culturing process, which makes Tahitian pearls particularly precious and often costly. Farms can be found throughout French Polynesia, and while Tahiti is well known as the trading centre for these pearls, there are no farms on the island itself.
